Porcellio scaber "Dalmatian" isopods are a striking, beginner-friendly morph featuring a crisp white body adorned with random black or Gray spots—resembling their canine namesake. These medium-sized rough woodlice (reaching ~0.68 inches) are native to Europe and have been selectively bred in captivity for their distinctive appearance.

Young specimens often start pale and develop more pronounced spotting as they mature, making them visually rewarding to observe over time.

These isopods thrive in temperatures between 18–26°C with medium humidity (70–80%) and a moisture gradient—keep one enclosure side damp with sphagnum moss and the other dry. They require good cross-ventilation and tolerate minor husbandry variations, making them forgiving for newcomers.

Dalmatians are highly active clean-up crew members in bioactive terrariums and vivarium's, efficiently processing decaying leaf litter and rotting wood. Feed them supplementary vegetables, protein sources like fish food, and calcium (cuttlebone). Their hardiness and lower sensitivity to drier conditions compared to other isopod species make them an excellent choice for building confidence in invertebrate keeping.
