Mini speckled isopods (Armadillidium peraccae) are robust, slow-moving woodlice native to Southern Europe and Greece. Prized by hobbyists for their unique, bumpy, trilobite-like texture, these fascinating creatures grow to 1.5–1.8 cm and feature a coarse, granular, shark-skin-like carapace in slate-grey or bluish-purple with delicate light speckles.

These isopods are active and social during the day, and can fully roll into a tight ball when threatened—a captivating behaviour to observe. They thrive in standard room temperatures (18–26°C) and prefer slightly drier conditions than many other Armadillidium species, making them ideal for keepers seeking a lower-humidity option.

Set up an enclosure with a moisture gradient: one damp corner and a larger dry area, plus plenty of cork bark and leaf litter for hiding and foraging. Feed them decaying hardwood, white-rotten wood, leaf litter, occasional vegetable scraps, and supplementary protein or calcium such as cuttlebone or limestone flour.

Perfect for collectors and bioactive vivarium enthusiasts looking for a hardy, visually striking species with engaging behaviour.
